I was excited to be back with Abby and her friends! It’s such an awesome series and the best part is that even after a long, long break between books, I am able to just jump right into the story! The series reads as a set of stand-alones, yet some bits and bobs carry over, mostly the personal events of Abby’s life, such as her recent wedding.In this story, we are immediately thrown into the thick of things. Abby wakes up in the middle of night to receive a stressing voicemail from her best friend Candice. Then what comes next is the hugest shock of them all; a video of Candice shooting someone point blank and thus killing him in cold blood. But Abby knows in her gut that Candice is innocent. She refuses to believe that the friend she’s had for years was really a cold-blooded killer.And so the case is on! Granted everyone else gets involved. When the wife of an FBI detective, though I think Brice is higher up, I just can’t recall his official position, is accused of murder, things get serious real quick. Suddenly, Brice is forced on a temporary leave as he is too close to the case and then Dutch is transferred to the San Antonio branch. Things are a mess, and through it all Abby does what she does best. Which amid solving a crime, is getting into a bit of trouble along the way and likely giving her hubby heart failure.I love Abby! She’s such a fun character! She’s truly relatable on many levels, even with her psychic abilities, which I love! She’s also very down to earth in some ways. She’s a caring and considerate person. And then there’s her tendency to swear quite a bit and then thinking of good reasons why she doesn’t owe to the swear jar for said curse word. And they’re totally legitimate reasons too! LOL!Abby really knows how to keep her cool in the dicey situations she finds herself in. When you throw in multiple homicides, multiple break-ins, the mob, and other dastardly people, it’s easy to lose your cool and yet Abby, remains pretty calm throughout most of it! But then I also love when she loses her cool a bit, because it’s just a realistic reaction.This was a rather quick read too! And it seemed every time I found I had to stop because of life and such, it was always at a huge chapter cliffhanger! I mean what are the odds of that Pretty typical in my case! Haha.A Psychic Eye Mystery series is one of my favorites. Ironically, my top two paranormal mystery authors both write two series, so it’s a joy to have 2 books a year from them. And considering I am way behind, I have even more! I think a crossover between all four of these series would be totally AMAZING! Victoria is friends with Juliet Blackwell, who is my other favorite paranormal mystery author, and while they’ve each done a crossover of some sort with their own series, I think a huge multi-one would be completely amazing!If you’re looking for a fun, quirky, yet still totally edgy and mysterious mystery series, than I cannot recommend Victoria Laurie enough!Overall Rating 5/5 stars1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Best In this SeriesBy Robert G. BrosseauSo let's get the obvious out of the way. In the interest of full disclosure, yes both my wife and I are long time friends of Victoria. Having said that, I just sent her a text telling her that I thought this was her best book yet, and she has written some very good ones, good enough to be a NYT best selling author. I could use a lot of superlatives at this point, and hope that others will support my friend by buying her book. Which I certainly hope that many do. However, let me explain that my favorite fiction authors are those who develop interesting characters and then let their personalities play out in great stories through their works.Parker's Spenser, Higgins' Sean Dillon, Cornwell's Scarpetta are all on my bookshelf. Victoria has in this book both the compelling character(s) and the great story and I'm pleased to recommend Fatal Fortune and what I believe is my talented friends very best book to date.25 of 28 people found the following review helpful.Series is on a Downward SlideBy CodeedoThis series started out so well. The first few books were excellent. And then the fatal flaws started creeping in: Abby's sister who is a genius business woman starts to become "adorably wacky" driving construction equipment and trying to become a wedding planner (how does she have time for this with a global business and small children Oh right, we have to start including wacky characters in cozy mysteries like every other author). In this book, Abby actually refers to her close friend as her "BFF" no less than 20 times in the first 50 pages. My 10 year old daughter doesn't say "BFF" and certainly no adult I know. Furthermore, Abby marries the love of her life then continually lies to him and sneaks out of their house like a naughty teenager Good grief. This author needs to ignore the Janet Evanovich tendencies and stick to Abby as she once was--intelligent, interesting and likable. She is now silly, sophomoric and annoying. Sigh.
