Kay MurphyFirst of all, full disclosure here: I admit my own bias toward any novel that includes a ghost as a sentient character. And in this one, not only is the ghost entertaining, he's Celtic as well! Bonus points!!Having said that, let me also say that if the spirit world is anything like the world Kathleen Shaputis depicts here, I think I'm pretty much ready to cross over!I loved this book because it is romantic without being cheesy or sappy, ghostly without being Gothic, and it never takes itself too seriously.When Baillie, the goofy but lovable protagonist, is told she has a ghost trying to communicate with her, she tries everything to deny his presence--until the news arrives that she has inherited a castle in Scotland, where she ultimately finds herself face to face with the lord of the castle himself (in ghostly form). For its humor, the book reminded me of the old TV series of my childhood, "Topper," which I loved.It should be noted here (for lovers of drag queen hilarity) that the characters of Rafael and T-Cup are especially memorable.Kudos to Shaputis for offering a fun page-turner with a great sinister villain and several unlikely heroes (including a horse). I really need to put "explore Scottish castles" on my bucket list!What a cute story! Baillie and Kai made a sweet couple. I especially loved the flamboyant trio of Gillian and the "girls". OMG, too funny!It gave my heart a squeeze to see how easily Baillie bonded with those around her. How she even took to Rogue, putting the orphan's needs above her own.How interesting to read a story with a heroine who was only discovering her true love in her fifties. Refreshing. We never know when love will happen but there is someone out there for everyone, and if we're patient, we will find them.I've heard that a sequel is in the works and I can't wait to read it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Read the Series in One Fell SwoopBy DOCI read Her Ghost Wears Kilts and its sequel, His Lass Wears Tartan, back to back, and I would recommend that other readers do so, too. There was much to admire in this first book: a wonderful, fifty-something heroine, an interesting Scottish ghost, an eccentrically funny and original plot, and strong secondary characters who seemed to leap from my Kindle. The world-building of the Afterlife in both stories was excellent, and it is clear the author did a lot of thinking about it. My one wish is for an addition half-way through the novel; no real spoiler here, but while the action of the heroine regarding what happened after an "attack" was explained later on, her motivation for doing what she did should have been revealed right after the incident. However, that did not interfere with my overall enjoyment of the story. The second novel, His Lass Wears Tartan, was wonderful, a five star read, and I recommend enjoying both novels in one delightful fell swoop.See all 60 customer reviews...
