The author uses real people and crimes for this piece of fiction. I felt it was a bit repetitious at times. The main character is interesting and likable, but a bit too good to be true at times. I felt some of the crimes were disconnected in some ways. I wished that the author had used them to relate to the current crime. Also, the heroine doesn't find the killer using her detective skills. It's a coincidence and not everything gets tied up at the end. I felt a little let down. It is a good quick read. I do recommend his second book Brooklyn on Fire with the same heroine.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Did Mary really solve this murderBy Cindy SegalI enjoyed reading this and learning about that era of NYC. The characters are well thought out. But, at some point, I asked myself what detective work she did to find the killer. She was sent on a wild goose chase and found herself near Kate/Lizzie's hometown. After seeing a photo and talking to Mrs. King, she knew who killed Charlie. There were no clues the reader could follow and I wonder if she would have figured out who the murderer was without that bit of luck. Yes, other detectives get lucky, because they are following leads and manage to find the one person/thing that connects the dots. There were no dots for Mary or the reader to connect.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful."Second Street Station" is Thoroughly Charming, Exciting, Interesting and Fun To Read!By Sharon KatzA very colorful, well-written story, filled with action, suspense, humor, and intriguing, complex characters, each with well-delineated goals and motivation. It's backdrop is the late 1800s, America's Guilded Age, a time when the poor immigrants and factory workers of the growing cities spawned a class of wealthy industrialists, successful entrepreneurs, inventors, corrupt politicians, and the thugs who did their dirty work. These are the characters who populate this book and with whom Mary Handley, a brilliant and independent female who handles the oppression she encounters with steely determination and humor, has to deal. Given an opportunity to fulfill her lifelong dream of solving crimes, she confronts the dark side of, and matches wits with, some of the most powerful and well known men of the time (as well as with a few powerful women, not the least of which is her mother!). The courage, intelligence and resourcefulness with which she ccomplishes this is fascinating. Having read that this was a first novel, I was amazed at the writer's skill. I then found out that Lawrence H. Levy had been a successful writer for TV series such as "Seinfeld." Nevertheless.
