Using these guides, along with Manhattan's 5 lb. Book of Practice Problems, I was able to improve from a low-160s verbal diagnostic score to a 170, and from a 150s quantitative score to a 164. I really enjoyed how thorough these books are, as they teach you not only the formulas and words needed to perform well on the GRE, but the reading/mathematical strategies and ways of thinking necessary to arrive at the correct answers for every question type.The guides are short enough to digest each individually in just a few days, and they give you practice questions along the way, including end-of-chapter and end-of-book problem sets, that range from the most basic GRE questions to the most difficult. There are so many questions that I was able to go through each book at least twice while having each question seem fresh to me (try using notebooks instead of writing in the books themselves). I would also recommend going over the Drill Sets of each book every so often to stay sharp on all mathematical and verbal concepts.These books also come with 1,000 common GRE words (500 basic and 500 advanced), many of which I saw on the test itself. I would recommend setting up some Vocabulary.com or Quizlet flashcard sets, and doing about 20 sets of 50 words. The Manhattan word list, along with Magoosh's free flashcards and mobile vocabulary app, proved invaluable for me on test day.These books also come with 6 practice GRE tests (through an online account), which I would definitely recommend taking. The interface is very similar to that of the actual test, and so is the difficulty.Would definitely recommend getting these books and the 5 lb. Book if you're interested in a self-guided prep route.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.Not perfect but the best choice for serious studentsBy Vince KotchianI tutor the GRE and have done so since 2008. I'm happy to report that the Manhattan GRE books are like eight crisp breaths of fresh air compared to their largely mediocre (and stale) competition. For the serious GRE self-preparer, these books, when combined with official GRE material, will take you very far. There are a couple of flaws, but IF you have the discipline to work through eight books (and the cash to afford them), these guides are quite simply your very best bet.The foremost strength of these guides is their comprehensiveness. They aim to cover all the concepts the GRE will present, and I think they do. Most one-book guides can't and don't.The writing is authoritative and easy-to-read. The techniques presented are generally useful and easy to follow. I did notice a couple of things I didn't like: math techniques such as plugging in numbers and back-solving are rarely explained or described. This may be because only the practice sets at the end of each book have multiple choice questions. These are crucial math techniques and should be your first line of defense against many GRE problems. Verbal techniques are good, sometimes a bit oversimplified, and at times perhaps difficult for most students to use (the mantra advice for reading comp, for instance). I'd suggest Manhattan publish a separate math book with a focus on techniques as opposed to concepts, but that might cut into their course sales...Another benefit of these books is that any of them gives you access to six online multistage GRE-like tests, which are useful practice, since there are only two computer practice tests available from the real GRE. Another good addition to these books is Manhattan's famous 5-pound book of GRE practice problems. Manhattan questions are not perfect imitations of real GRE questions, so use them but do not analyze them too much compared to authentic GRE questions.Despite my issue with the dearth of math techniques and my lukewarm feelings about those for verbal, I strongly recommend you get these books early and use them often. These guys know their stuff and it shows. The only sporting thing for their competition to do at this point is to throw in the towel.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Concrete Advice, Lots of MaterialBy Juliana BesenbruchI didn't have time to go through everything in this set, but I did pick up a few useful strategies. The math sections were quite understandable, and I especially liked their advice for the essay portion of the test. It gave me a set of strategies to use in the face of writer's block. I did not look much at the verbal reasoning section beyond studying the vocabulary list.I spent about 80 hours studying, spread out over several weeks. Compared with the official but low-pressure practice test I took before I used these books, my QR raw score went up by 3 points, and my VR raw score went up by 6 points. The AW sections made the largest jump for me, largely because I started this whole process unable to write an essay in 30 minutes.See all 105 customer reviews...
