The conversations and the characters feel really human. I worked in investment banking at a bulge bracket, although only as an analyst - I eventually realized it was just not for me. I really enjoyed reading Sherry's writing which brought back memories of some of the female MD's I really admired. Her mention of the GCC reminded me of conversations I've been a part of and the characters thoughts echoed my own at times. It is interesting to see "inside" the mind of someone who made it to that level, balancing relationships both personal and professional as well as family. Even though I stay home with my children these days (but still keep up with peers and friends "in the trenches"), her utterly human sentiments of being conflicted between professional and personal obligations are entirely relatable to all. Some of the scenes (toddler at chapel scene, the relationship with Henry) had me laughing in a "been there" sort of way. I really liked her fluid, colloquial writing style which reads very much like a narrative or a conversation with a friend. As for the finance stuff that other reviewers mentioned - I don't feel like any of it is beyond understanding and in fact she breaks things down into very simple terms for any reader. Some of the names seem to be obvious parallels to real life firms and deals so that adds to the enjoyment of wondering who, if anyone, she is really talking about. To be truthful, the addition of these details add to the story because the numbers are part of the dynamics and relationships between the characters. Even if you haven't worked on Wall Street, I feel this is a really enjoyable read.12 of 13 people found the following review helpful.Believable and readableBy WritergirlThis is a smart, well-paced novel and Maureen Sherry clearly understands Wall Street from the working Mom perspective. The examples of sexism and misogyny are appalling, but they are presented as part of what women corporate bankers must endure. Don't like it Leave.A natural comparison for this book is I Don't Know How She Does it by Allison Pearson. There are many similarities in the two books (even the age of the protagonists, which is 36). I found Opening Belle to be the stronger piece of fiction; the Pearson book had too much writing that didn't move the story along. The distinctions between the comic madness of a crazy-paced life and the sadness that goes with it are better integrated in Sherry's book.Belle earns an incredible salary but she is almost completely responsible for her family's expenses. Given that she lives in a 4,000-sq foot apartment in Manhattan, sends 3 kids to private school and basically supports her husband (who seems to shop more than she does) her life does not come cheap. The descriptions of the stock market and Belle's job responsibilities are intricate and Sherry does not spoon feed the reader. There were some things I just didn't understand and won't until I do more research, but that is okay. Sherry writes for the business-and-market-savvy reader. I was disappointed in Belle letting former boyfriend Henry back into her life, because the way he treated her was appalling. But Belle's decision is equally believable, because we often think more with our hearts than our heads - even managing directors on Wall street.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.Grown Men Acting Despicably .... what else is newBy Samantha GlickAlthough this seemed as if it would be another "chick lit" book it was actually very interesting and informative. The writing is articulate, moves fast and give us insight into a sexist industry in a very pragmatic way. There is no moral to the story here .... the behavior of juvenile males is well-known to those of us over a certain age and continues to be a surprise to younger women. I suggest the younger ones read this novel and take it to heart .... this is indeed the behavior of a lot of the male population in every field of endeavor.See all 198 customer reviews...
