If you have ever wanted to set around a camp fire with a Vietnam helicopter pilot, have him tell stories of his time flying missions over there and what the experience was like serving in Vietnam then this book will fill that need; you may also learn a few things the army would prefer to keep from public knowledge. As I read it I would envision a much older mature soldier giving the serious responsibilities and extreme circumstances of combat that Mr. Gross writes about, but keep in mind this was a 19-20 y/o very young man as his one year of service plays out in this book. This book is an easy read and I highly recommend especially to any Vietnam/Aviation/History/War buffs. I would also recommend his book, First Light. It's a novel that will get you emotionally involved and leave you wondering - is it fiction or not0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Good Picture of What it was LikeBy theweedAfter reading this book, I went back to look at the reviews again. The one and two-star reviewers must be looking for something other than what this book was about. Although the writing suffers from inexperience, the author manages to relay his feelings and thoughts about the Vietnam War and what it meant to him to be a part of it. Anyone who has courage enough to write about it on a personal level is deserving of respect for what he did. Criticisms can be harsh it the reviewer fails to understand the message of the book or overlooks what that message is. This isn't a book about thrilling combat episodes and boasting, as so many books about Vietnam are. There's much more to it than that. In view of my own experiences in the Vietnam War, I found the book to be one of the most honest portrayals of an Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.This story is told by a pilot and is a great read.By BruceThis man's story, as he tells it is exciting, and informative to those that are pilots and those interested in flying. You have the feeling that your best friend that served in Nam was telling you how life in the army, flying a Huey in Vietnam was for him. This book leaves you feeling proud of him and the others that he served with. Get a better understanding of what our soldiers go through emotionally when serving, and get an understanding of the sacrifices (giving up your fun young years 18 - 23 at home, leaving friends and family) that our men and woman who served then and today live with.As you read this book, you can hear the heavy rotor blade beating of his Huey flying by....Great read.See all 104 customer reviews...
