Yet the story didn't grab me quite like I had hoped. Not that it was bad! I still enjoyed it but I far from loved it.My main issue was Kaitlyn. I felt strangely detached from her. She was created to not have emotions or feelings yet she does. but how that came across to me as a reader was empty. I didn't feel much curiosity and for all she is suppose to feel and understand she goes along with what everyone else tells her WAY to easily. So I got no distinct personality. No idea what she does or doesn't like. At the VERY end I get a brief glimmer finally but the rest was just being told what she felt. I was definitely an audience member and not a part of this story.Lucas' perspective was a bit better but even he was rather dull. I like getting to really know the main characters. Their personalities and quirks and this book is void of that for just about anyone. The story itself was easy to read. It seemed shorter than it was and I had hoped a bit more what happen, but it still moves along reasonably well. Scenes like the paintball war I would have loved to see elaborated on. Simply hearing That she ran and within a few seconds had tagged everyone is not that exciting to read. Again, being told the story from a detached place. The writing is simple and decent enough, but seemed to target more a middle grade reading level. This is suppose to be a series but I am unsure if I will continue. I don't like not finishing a series but I just had a hard time really enjoying this one. While it isn't bad, I felt like I was reading simply to say I read. No deep pleasure which I love felling with a book. 2.5 stars20 of 21 people found the following review helpful.A great introductory bookBy Yvonne @ The Shadow RealmI'm going to start off by saying that I started this book with a bit of trepidation. You see I had had recently read another book by Crane, Eternal Youth and I have to say I didn't love it. I was left disappointed when I finished the book and so I was a bit worried that this book would be the same. But I am glad to say that is not the case. I loved this book! It was everything I was hoping it would be.Freak of Nature tells the story of Kaitlyn, a young girl who was moment ago on deaths door, only to find that she is now a cyborg. She was made to be the ultimate soldier, with no emotions or family ties. She is meant to be cold and heartless. But somehow, somewhere, something went wrong. They made a fatal error - Kaitlyn can feel. She does have emotions. But no one must ever know. For if they did, they would take those emotions away from, or worse, shut her down. So she plays the good little robot. But its not so easy when she's around Lucas. He makes her feel things that she can't explain. Things she shouldn't feel. And even though Lucas is one of the scientists that have made her this way, he can't stop the feelings that he has this amazing creature. Can they ever find a way to be together Or will Kaitlyn be for ever more just a lonely girl trapped in a robots body. The story found in this book is something I've never read about before. So immediately I was so intrigued by how the story would play out. It switches POV between Kaitlyn and Lucas which I really liked. I loved getting Lucas' side of things. I always say that there are two sides to every story. I loved both characters. You really feel for both of them, especially Kaitlyn. You are just so sad for her and keep hoping that the scientists won't find out about her feelings and shut her down. Lucas I liked because he felt so believable. You understand why he did some of the things he did. I also liked that he was kind of shy and awkward. It just made him even cuter. The story itself isn't that action-packed or suspenseful. It focus more building up the back-story and the love aspect. But this is the first book in a series so hopefully the next book will be more action-packed and we'll get to see more of Kaitlyn in action with all her enhanced traits. This was a quick and very enjoyable read and a great introductory book. I am really looking forward to the next installment. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a unique read with a sweet romance.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Bartender Rating: House/WellBy The Book BarThis and more reviews at The Book Bar.coObviously, from the cover you get that this is a sci-fi book. I usually have to be in a certain mood to take on these reads. I don't want to be too overwhelmed with jargon that will lose my interest. Freak of Nature is a perfect book for readers that are stuck in a rut and open mix things up. Even if you've never read sci-fi before, Freak of Nature is a perfect introduction to this genre. The main character is half human, half robot. They were robbing her of her life experiences—memories of old ones, and the pleasure in new ones—they were piece by piece removing her soul. Soon, all she would have left was the technology and not the person … if there was even anything left.Crane, Julia (2014-01-10). Freak of Nature (IFICS Book 1) (p. 42). Valknut Press. Kindle Edition. From the blurb, you know this is against her knowledge, she technically "died" and became property of a science experiment. The science behind it wasn't cruel or distributing, everything was kept very simple and on task. The science aspect isn't too heavy. The narrator addresses the gadgets that make her function, how she looks and what she thinks, but it's very easy to understand and believe. The writing altogether flows perfectly. You can sense the hopelessness that Kaitlyn feels when she observes her blank, white walls and projected future use; a weaponized super soldier. The fact that she still has "feelings" or emotions, humanizes the story and makes the romantic relationship between Kate Lucas believable. At first you may think that Lucas being turned on by a "robot" is a little disturbing. But when Kate tells the readers how she is experiencing indescribable reactions to Lucas, something that is not programmed into her new body mind, you begin to understand that she is more human than machine. The guilt had not left him since she arrived. If anything, it had increased. She was a person, a human. A beautiful, living, helpless girl chosen to become Dr. Harrington’s lab rat and have every ounce of her humanity erased. He wished he had known her before they altered her personality.Crane, Julia (2014-01-10). Freak of Nature (IFICS Book 1) (p. 26). Valknut Press. Kindle Edition. The end of her training and programming leads us to the next step of her new life, being sold to the highest bidder. In this case, the members of the armed forces. Author Julia Crane, briefly touches on this part, careful not to lead us astray into government discussions. The tempo is picked up again as Lucas installs Kate's old memories and she starts to recount her last life. There is suspense and adventure leading to a cliff-hanger that addresses Kaitlyn's new goal in "life".There were several men and women sitting behind a long table; backs straight, and all eyes solely on Kaitlyn as she entered. Many were dressed in military uniforms. Kaitlyn’s computer scanned each for identification: High-ranking officials from three different branches. Army, Navy, and Air Force. ‘Caution’ flashed on her internal screen. Thanks, computers, she thought, slightly annoyed. I’m well aware the situation is problematic.Crane, Julia (2014-01-10). Freak of Nature (IFICS Book 1) (p. 170). Valknut Press. Kindle Edition.Freak of Nature is the first in the IFICS series and I would recommend it to readers looking for a change in their genre but don't want to completely cut out the romance from their read.See all 428 customer reviews...
