He was one of 's picks and I really appreciate your offering these because I do check them out, even if only for one read, but this author has a style that I am going to read the series on - long as it may be. I find them descriptive, very visual, and he throws curves here and there. I thought at first he was too descriptive, but then I realized he was materializing the location, person, situation in a way that dropped you into it, almost unknowingly, but all of a sudden you were in the scene!! I really couldn't stop reading it until the end, then I had to go on to the next, and then the I just finished the next, The Pusher - and still I think fabulous, descriptive, writing. One where you wouldn’t have to make giant leaps of faith with the lead gumshoe. For instance, when you saw a murder, you didn’t call a private eye, you called the cops.He introduced the world to a type of novel that would feature an entire department of the police force. He would focus on all the characters, but spotlight different ones in different books while keeping the rest of the department visible. Also, no one is safe.This series is widely known for inspiring the hit TV series Law and Order, and it’s very easy to draw the parallels there.This book opens up with a bang, quite literally as a cop is gunned down. The descriptions are gritty for its time. Gruesome without being disgusting while still shocking the audience.It’s up to Steve Carella and his partner to try to solve the murder with almost nothing to go on. The character of Steve Carella is painted as a hard man with sentimental tendencies while away from the force. That bleeds into his work a bit at a time and you get a really good feeling for how he operates though out the book.The other characters on the force are brought forth little by little and add to the aspect that this is a series about the entire force, and not just one detective. You even get the animosity between the beat cops and the detectives for a time.One of the best parts of this book is that you don’t get to really see the grand plan of the antagonists. The book is very much from the perspective of law enforcement. You get little insights to the villains, but I enjoyed being kept in the dark and discovering things and making the connections along with Steve Carella and Hank Bush.If you are a Kindle Unlimited member you can read this, as well as get the audio book from audible without making another purchase. I listened to the audio book, narrated by Dick Hill, and that was a wise decision. His narration is the embodiment of the time period and does a wonderful job.The Bottom Line: This was a great sketch of the 1950′s crime novel. The plot used simple smoke screen devices to perfection to keep you guessing until the very end. You’ll have your thoughts, and you’ll be wrong, and you’ll love every minute of it. The writing is dirty, the world is covered with a layer of dust, and he shows from book one why he was the master of his craft. Evan Hunter, author of The Blackboard Jungle and screenwriter for Hitchcock's, The Birds, is better known today as Ed McBain because of the 87th Precinct series. He wrote Cop Hater in 1955 in hopes of filling a void being created at Pocket Books by the slightly diminishing output of the prolific Erle Stanley Gardner. The 87th Precinct novels not only filled that void, they broke new ground, creating the first and finest of all police procedurals.It seems old-hat today, tagging along with Carella, Kling, Meyer Meyer, Hawes and the rest of the 87th Precinct cops as they tried to solve multiple crimes so they could make it home to their sweethearts or go find one, but when Cop Hater was written, it stood alone as something unique. Despite it being imitated over the decades in various ways by a lot of authors, some of them very good in their own right, it still does.In Cop Hater we are introduced for the first time to Detective Steve Carella, a mainstay of the revolving rotation of cops working out of the 87th Precinct that we would come to know over the next few decades. Carella was in love with the deaf Teddy in this one, and she'll end up playing a major role as the search for a cop killer turns very deadly and perhaps fatal for some members of the 87th Precinct.Set in the fictional Isola, which mirrored New York City, Isola is its own character here, McBain giving it a pulse and a heartbeat. When one of their own is slain, the boys of the 87th doggedly pursue every avenue they can to discover who is out there killing cops. The tawdry and seedier aspects of Isola's underbelly is shown while we follow Carella and the boys as they augment police procedures with hunches and persistence. But two more cops are slain before Carella figures out almost too late, that this particular cop hater is hiding a lot more than a .45.McBain doesn't cheat the reader during the fast and involving narrative. We see everything the cops do, including an intimate scene we read as wrong as one of the cops does. Filled with humor and grit, and more than a bit of tenderness, Cop Hater is one of McBain's finest, despite some outdated police techniques. Like John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series and Donald Hamilton's Matt Helm series, McBain always gets right into the story, and in no time you're in Isola with Carella and the boys. You don't have to start with Cop Hater to enjoy this series, but you don't want to miss it either. A real winner.See all 337 customer reviews...
