It brings up so many global issues that really inform you about the world around you as well as new ways to think and look at things. Brilliant!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Plagued by underdeveloped arguments and shoddy researchBy truthvThis book is interesting in some places, but only as a jumping off point for further research. It presents a very one sided narrative, and often glosses over or fails to mention research that contradicts its assertions. It adequately explains most issues it touches on, but tends to oversimplify the causes, failing to provide sufficient proof to back up the assertions that it treats as fact. The author, a Canadian, humorously spends much of the book accusing her fellow Westerners of being Eurocentric, and failing to elevate the voices of those in non-Western nations. An admittedly valid point which she proves with her heavy reliance on the research of Western anthropologists and social scientists for her main points.The text is sprinkled with references to the work of others, but if you go and actually read the research being cited, you notice that the conclusions being drawn by Fedorak are not necessarily supported there.The book comes very close to being insightful on several occasions, but is ultimately bogged down by its own underdeveloped and contradictory arguments.See all 2 customer reviews...
