The quotes are insightul and entertaining (and fun as hell), but the book itself is a bit of a mess. Far too often, people and events are mentioned in the book, dropped, and then brought up later again as if they'd never been mentioned earlier in the book. The author will provide a narative paragraph, and then immediately follow it with a quote that repeats everything he'd just said in the previous paragraph. This stuff happens constantly. There was no continuity editor on this project and, even though the story of the band is riveting, the book reads like a bunch of essays all stuck together with no thought of how they step on each other. I'm glad I read the book, but it could have been 50 pages shorter if it had been edited to take out all of the repeated info.The other thing that has me wondering is the author's statement on the copyright page that says 'Campbell Devine asserts the moral right to be identified as the author of this work'. WTF An overly defensive statement like this makes me think that it should be prefaced with 'No matter what anyone else says...' It's a weird statement. Given how much of the book is made up of quotes and the overall ineptness of the writing, it makes me wonder how much of this was 'borrowed. from other people's interviews with the band and associates.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Loved it.By Monster Zero TunesHuge Mott fan-loved the book. Very detailed and almost a bit too much at times with information but true fans of the band will love this. The writer didn't miss much. The book ends before Buffin died and they regrouped for reunion shows. I love Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson but came away somewhat disenchanted by the way they threw the Mott members under the bus and abruptly left Mott once Ronson joined. Overend Watts and Buffin et al were just kicked to the curb with nothing. Right on the eve of a great money making tour. I felt really sorry for them. Seems Ronno and Hunter could have at least done a farewell tour. I saw Hunter/Ronson band which was great but I lost a lot of respect for both of them which surprised me-I've worshipped both of them for years after seeing them. Great read. Get it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.All the way from HerefordshireBy dsThis is a fascinating account detailing nearly every aspect of one of my favorite groups/artisits of the past 35+ years (I became a Mott fan in '73 at age 12 or 13). I've always been intrigued by the behind-the-scenes workings, the other artists Mott knew and enjoyed, or perhaps didn't get along with. It's all here. Episode after episode contains detailed explanations, (and more often than not) confirmed by the various parties involved. I essentially knew the character of Ian Hunter, having read his book, numerous interviews, lyrics, etc. but what really impressed me in this book were the incisive, insightful contributions by Pete Watts and (particularly) Dale Griffin. Their candor and recollection are priceless - not just a distant or disinterested rhythm section. This caused me to go back and listen to Mott's recordings from a different perspective, one that for years I took for granted; That is, listening more attentively to Griffin's contribution. I've concluded that he's a much better drummer than I ever gave him credit for, attacking songs head on rather than waiting for the songs to come to him. Great job Buff!See all 13 customer reviews...
