It's a very hard book to put down, I always want to know what's going to happen tomorrow1 of 1 people found the following review helpful."Into the Nanten"... the Pros and Cons... 3 1/2 StarsBy R. Nicholson"Into the Nanten - The Record of My Exile" is the first book in a series by author Jay Swanson with illustrations by Nimit Malavia. This Kindle e-book was approximately 467 printed pages and sold for $2.99 at time of writing this review. Please Note: I was provided with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.General Theme (minor spoilers)Marceles na Tetrach is sent into the uncharted jungles of Nanten to try to find the previously exiled, Brin Salisir. This book is literally a series of daily entries in a journal, detailing his experiences in his search for any clues that may lead him to the missing exile... clues that are already 20 years old. Thus begin Jay Swanson's own version into the heart of darkness. Some thoughts on "Into the Nanten"... the Pros and Cons1.) well written, edited and accompanied by many superb illustrations.2.) many encounters, graphically described. Many of which are not for the faint of heart.3.) a persistently dark and foreboding atmosphere, that after a while, may weigh heavily on the reader's psyche... I know it did mine.4.) some magic was involved... featuring some unique and intriguing variations of the occult arts.5.a) maps... there were a couple small area maps that our heroes came across while on their quest, and were subsequently displayed at the end of the same chapter (journal entry).5.b) if I had a wish it would have been for these maps to be centrally located at the beginning of the book. I did not bother to bookmark the smaller maps when I came across them, so I felt continually lost in this expansive and diverse geographic landscape.6.) in all honesty, despite this novel being well written, I struggled with the diary/journal format. My interest in this work started to wane about one-third the way through and from this point often found myself skimming... even more so towards the end when I simply wanted to be finished. I found the narrative had a repetitious quality to it, there was a lot of introspective and repetitive navel gazing, and for some reason the protracted lack of a sense of direction by our protagonists gave me an uncomfortable feeling of claustrophobia.Impressions:I think most readers of will enjoy this work; I, simply put, did not... and I can honestly say that this was the first Jay Swanson book that I have felt this way that about. As it is...3 1/2 Stars. (rounded up, as most concerns were of my own personal, subjective feelings)Ray Nicholsonraynicholsonsreviews@hotmail.com@ralannicholson0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Definitely recommend.By CustomerThere is so much to love about this series. I was lucky enough to first stumble upon Into The Nanten at a local coffee shop. In its printed form, this is a book that feels very good in your hands. From the weight of the pages to the stunning artwork (which frequently illuminates the narrative) I enjoyed this read in purely visceral, book-nerd fashion. I have to admit to being a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the art of reading, but after devouring my copy of ITN, I eagerly transitioned to an online format to read Fall of the Arbor King (book 2 in the series) before it became available in hard copy. The world Jay Swanson has created is rich, and varied. I see that one reviewer struggled with the journal format. For me, it's what pulled me in. The jungle itself is a pivotal, mercurial character in this world, and through his sketches and written entries -see previous comment on the illustrations- our protagonist describes his environment beautifully. The journal entries additionally allow us a window into Marceles' worldview and personal landscape....which the Nanten seems to shatter and re-shape on a daily basis. This process really hooked me. I became a huge fan of this series not just because of the world it's set in, but how the characters -especially Marceles- evolve throughout the narrative. Definitely a wild ride. Definitely recommend.See all 10 customer reviews...
