Several people I remember from Marion were interviewed and mentioned by name, which I found kind of cool and jarring at the same time. I like the way this author thinks and I love the way she leads the reader along on the search for answers and meaning. I felt like I was an insider and she was an outsider. I kind of had that feeling you have when watching the movie Titanic -- you know the ship will sink but the characters don't. So I was thinking that the author should go to this place or go to that place or look around this corner, but she would take a wrong turn. She also discovered some interesting new things down those turns. However, she missed some important people and missed some nuances.I almost gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 due to the inordinate amount of time the author spent on a ku klux klan tangent, meeting with the current klan and going to their events and their homes in Marion and in Ft. Wayne (which might as well be another world). Also the author saves a big revelation for the ending of the book about the real ringleaders in the lynching and their location and connections. She could have removed most of the information about the klan and focused on the actual people she indicates were involved. Many times she was blinded and led astray by her own preconceived ideas. She came into her Marion project with ideas about the divisions between black people, white people, and native american people. Such rigid models just don't apply in a place like Marion. In Marion there are other stratifications at work (and I don't personally endorse these divisions) -- there are the white people on the north side of town, the white people on the south side, the white people who are considered by the people on the north side of town to be "hillbillies" and white trash, the white people around the college, people of Mexican ancestry who owned many properties in South Marion (and were never mentioned in the book), the black people in "bucktown" (sorry), and the Weavers/Pettifords. The Weavers and Pettifords have always been black and white (and native american). They were mixed race people who migrated to the area with the help of Quakers and they've continued to be distinct. FYI.I was fascinated with the author's interactions with the man who escaped the lynching. I had always heard about him and I read his book in school as a child, but I never had any idea that some people in Marion rejected his story or that there was any part of his story that was questionable. I guess because I learned about him in school I took his story at face value. I still think he is very brave to tell the story as he remembers in and a hero for starting his museum. I never knew the whole story about Frances Slocum either. Fascinating.I highly recommend this book. I think its flaws are an authentic part of the author's research process and I enjoyed going through that process with her. I'll find another of her books to read too.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Book was interesting. The main reason that I read ...By Gaetana M. DurhamBook was interesting. The main reason that I read it was because I am from Marion Indiana and on the cover the picture was in the neighborhood that I lived in. Also I was curious of the lynching that took place in the 30's. I also saw a reference of my grandfather which cleared a few misgivings of the past about him. Although the last name was spelled wrong I knew who they were talking about. The young man Abram Smith is a relative of my family which I didn't know until my adult life.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The dark side of human natureBy Nancy MillsI was aware of this incident through my in-laws (which ow look more like outlaws). This book reveals the dark side of our humanity and the triuth about race relations. It is a book everyone should read who believed the North was liberal and accepting of people of color. My heart broke, and I took a good look at my own nature - the reader will feel some deep emotions during this story - not only as the author searchs her her own family's invovement, but the involvement of everyone who tainted generations and a community.See all 30 customer reviews...
