He has won over generations of children with his stories and bright beautiful illustrations. He lives 'down the road apiece' from me, and I try to go to every reading I can. This year DePaola was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal.This book is a reprinting of 4 stories that were previously published. The Legend of the Bluebonnet (An Old Tale of Texas), The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush (An Old Tale of Wyoming), The Legend of the Poinsettia (An Old Tale of Mexico), and Tony's Bread (An Old Tale of Italy). It's a very sweet, very spiritual Native American story, and DePaola does a wonderful job bringing it to life. My grandson was entralled with the stories and the illustrations. DePaola's stories are simple and straightforward without losing the essence or message of the story. The rich and vibrant colorful illustrations appear three dimensional and are representative of the legend's culture. The best thing about three of the legends is that the children who seem the least powerful or wise are the ones who's simple generous spirits bring blessings and gifts to their people.This is the perfect book for children of any age, and my grandson who loves to read himself, just devoured this book. Four of Tomie's books in one nice hardcover edition. Each story is a gem in itself. My 7-year old son (2nd grade) loves all of the stories, and Tomie de Paola is his favorite author. (Actually, I'm not sure who loves them more, me or him!) The stories are equally entertaining for adults, and the illustrations are phenomenal, as usual for Tomie. I was really impressed when the other day, my son sat down and read all 4 stories-the entire book-in one sitting. That is saying a lot for a boy who would generally rather play video games than do anything else! The stories were always the perfect length for a nighttime capper. But mainly it's the gorgeous, colorful, playful illustrations that captured their imaginations.My kids have grown too old, but I now have a 5 year old stepdaughter, who's the perfect age for these.
