The story was engaging and kept me (mostly) interested/entertained. My biggest complaint is the single-mindedness the heroine had about seducing a priest. Yes, our hero starts out as a monk, then is elevated to priest. As in deeply religious and celibate. If, of his own accord, he couldn't keep away from our heroine and fought with his own demons during this time I might have enjoyed it more. But, our heroine decides he needs saving from himself and sets out to seduce him. Not caring what he might want or believe. (Not to mention, in this time period, a priest was next to God and you had to be a truly terrible person to purposely set out to corrupt a priest.) Of course, she succeeds, and that brought new angst.Another complaint I had was this supremely tortured moment after their first encounter where they both decided they had failed at lovemaking. OK, so both were very inexperienced, and I accounted for that, but come on, if you blamed yourself that much, and fell into that much of a depression (both of them) about the sex experience, I just can't see the eagerness in which they both came back together. Hormones aside.I did like the ending, though I feel more should have been said about the traitor and what they did about it.All-in-all, it was an OK book and I might read the first two, if they are .99 or free. I wouldn't pay full price since my experience with this one was so-so.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.review of my heroBy RoslynnI have recently purchased several of Ms. Glynnis Campbell’s books now after reading the outcast combined in the winter stone novel. I think I was wrong to wait to read any of the novels she has written because truly this was such a great story with such wonderful three dimensional complex characters. Even though this is the third book in the knights of de Ware series it wasn’t hard to understand and can stand alone. I just immediately loved the heroine Cynthia her spitfire attitude, gumption, her penchant for flowers and lastly the fact that she is almost a mystical healer of sorts invoking the healing power of touch so from the get go Cynthia is just a girl after my own heart. The handsome conflicted warrior priest hero Gareth really made me admire yet feel sorry for him that I think the poor guy just needed a hug. I think he should not base his one physical and emotional experience with a woman should drive him to become a priest that it made me want to slap Mariana and wondered how she could be so cruelWe first meet Gareth and Cynthia when they are kids. Cynthia sees Gareth’s mother’s garden and is utterly enchanted by the garden but becomes stung by many bees. Gareth being such a good kid takes his knife and relieves Cynthia of the bee’s stings. Cynthia decides from that moment on that even with Gareth saving her that he is a hero and she will marry him. Nine years later Cynthia is married and watching her husband die tells the Abbot what her deceased husband has given him. Cynthia must find a new chaplain for her chapel and Gareth is sent to her chapel. Cynthia and Gareth remember each other and still the attraction is quite evident but there is an unforeseen danger of their burgeoning love. There is a lot of action, unexpected plot twists, interesting major/minor characters that I can’t wait to hear more about, steamy forbidden love and just a fascinating story throughout that it was difficult to put the story down!Even though I enjoyed the story very much there was just something that really confused me about Gareth. So Gareth is a brother or is he a priest I could never figure out if he actually took vows but I am assuming that maybe he did because he administers the sacraments I think so this could be explained a little bit better. Despite this one little issue I rated the story four stars, can recommend it and will read more from Ms. Campbell!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Lots of little smile momentsBy Elle FynllayAfter beginning the trilogy with the second book, My Warrior, I just had to find out how the youngest De Ware son, a man of the cloth, ends up becoming the romantic hero in the third book of the trilogy.What I love about Glynnis Campbell’s characters in this book, is that they are so, not typical of your normal hero and heroine.When we first meet Lady Cynthia le Wyte as an eleven year old, she is described as a sturdy, freckled, bare-foot would-be assassin of rose bushes with hair an outrageous shade of orange. Not much changes in the next ten years except she grows “ as statuesque and well proportioned as the pagan sculptures he’d (Garth) had seen long ago in Rome” and she has an immediate effect on Garth’s sensiblities.Garth de Ware, shows none of the sexual prowess of typical romance heroes. In fact, he has sexual hang-ups and is a monk devoting himself to God.Cynthia is in direct conflict with the religious as she uses herbs, some of which are associated with witch craft, to aid her special gift of healing.Garth’s devotion to God is in direct conflict to the way his body reacts to the Lady Cynthia. Lady Cynthia wants the hero who rescued her when she was eleven years old. Throw in an evil Abbot and a great plot and another Glynnis Campbell best seller is created.Campbell brings all her characters to life. In this short extract the Prior ponders what he should do with Garth, a man destined to be a warrior if not for being the third son.(Prior) Thomas ran a palm over his own round belly and expelled a weary puff of air. Above all, the prior liked order – lengths of wool that made exactly two cassocks, jongleur’s verses with happy endings, just enough of last year’s wine to last till the new barrels were ready, all loose ends tied. Such things were incontrovertible that God was in his heaven. Garth de Ware He was an anomaly, a reminder that perhaps all was not right with the world."The story abounds with lots of little smile moments, particularly as when Brother Garth resumes his acquaintance with the Lady Cynthia he has been bound to a vow of silence, ( a perfect penance devised by Prior Thomas to avoid listening to Garth’s self reproachments). Lady Cynthia uses this to her advantage.You are never sure how the hero and heroine will find a way to their HEA particularly with the Abbott’s evil plans for Cynthia’s castle and lands, and that’s why I read almost non stop to the end.Next decision to be made: read the first book in the de Ware trilogy which I missed or the first book in the Warrior Maids of RivenlochSee all 53 customer reviews...
