The promise of a fast paced, short and sweet epic fantasy really intrigued me. Actually, it sounded GREAT! I am one of those people that just could NOT get through LotR.I've heard people say that this author needs to add more description to his writing style and honestly I don't think that is the case at all. By the end of the book I was so deeply invested in the characters and their relationships, that I came away feeling saddened that the book was over. I'd read it in one sitting.I enjoyed the narrative style and the way the author said just enough for me to know how those characters felt, without being overly descriptive or playing out the "feels" scenes in long, dramatic detail. I understood and knew their feelings on an almost personal level and that's why I loved this book. The pacing and the effectiveness of the language is what made it such a rollercoaster. The fleeting moments between battles gave you the real sense of how a hero would live their life and that you were truly walking alongside them.To this end, I raise my hat to the author and look forward to the next RuneHammer book. I hope it is a tale with characters I care about as much as Mud and Horn, Sword and Sparrow, that make me feel emotional whenever I look back on them.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.FantasitcBy gabriel fischerNot since The Amory Wars novels have I read something so epic. The way the author tells the story of the four heroes is uncanny and told with much action and intrigue. Each moment is expressed so vividly and with such awesome diction, you'll be on the edge of your seat. This was a truly stunning work of fiction and I urge anyone who enjoys a genuinely unique piece of fantasy literature to give this a read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A Well-crafted distillate of what fantasy is meant to beBy Adam WoodA great, fast-paced read that I had to deliberately ration out in order to avoid finishing it in one sitting, this really read a lot like one of Ol' Hankerin's campaigns would play at least in my mind. Full of twisting, but easy to follow time jumps, archetypal but well-presented themes, and an immersive setting created with descriptions of things as simple as Gar (ale), this really struck me as a distilled essence of classic, Conan-eqsue fantasy with slightly more modern language. All in all a great read which really sucks the reader in and progresses at break-neck speed like the kind of DD campaign that you and your friends will tell stories about for years. I'll definitely be looking forward to the next novel Ol' Hank puts out there, whenever that happens to be.See all 34 customer reviews...
