"Waterloo" is his highly readable and bluntly opinionated take on the famous and fateful 1815 campaign. The book has much to offer, from a methodical approach, to highly informative descriptions of how the armies of that day did their business, to his willingness to shut down decades of historical controversy and mythmaking in favor of commonsense explanation. The result is an account that should greatly appeal to the general reader interested in the bicentennial of Waterloo. The student of the campaign may be properly wary of the light footnoting, but should still find much of interest. This reviewer, for example, was impressed with Corrigan's rationale, based on having walked the battlefield, for why the French Imperial Guard's last attack ended up against the strongest part of the Anglo-Dutch line.Corrigan tends to write from a British perspective but makes a determined effort to be even-handed in describing the contributions of the Anglo-Dutch and Prussian armies, and the French Army, to the final result at Mount St. Jean. His deep dives into weapons, personalities, and tactics make for a slightly disjointed narrative, but the wealth of information provided by this approach can only be helpful for the general reader. The text is nicely supplemented with a small selection of illustrations and a double handful of maps. Strongly recommended as a good read.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A well told story. Having read several other versions ...By Robert KnottsA well told story. Having read several other versions of the battle, I don't find anything particularly new--except, perhaps, the more modern style. Still, this book brings to life how close-run was the fight and what a "miracle" it was that Nappy came so damn close to kicking everybody's butt. Despite having been imprisoned, he escaped with practically nothing and managed to get back to Europe and amass a big enough army to almost win it all. Almost. If just an episode or three had gone another way...well, parley vou, pal1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It adds useful references to how practices in 1815 are similar and ...By revpsaThis is a much more orderly, readable, and informed military history than most accounts of a single campaign. It's well organized, with special attention to the historical context, the demographics of the various armies, the training and quality of the officers, and the details of the battle, laid out in understandable and more or less chronological order. It adds useful references to how practices in 1815 are similar and different from those today.See all 16 customer reviews... Waterloo: Wellington Napoleon and the Battle that Saved ... ...
