If there is a more complex character in literature, especially noir literature, than Jack Taylor, then i have failed to come across that character. This volume starts out in a different manner than the previous ten entries in the series. It begins with an introduction from the perspective of one of the characters in the novel.I can't say that this is all that different from the other Jack Taylor novels Bruen has penned, perhaps a bit darker, if that is possible. It is full of Jack's relationships to various lowlife of Galway, lots of drinking, lots of violence and one hell of a mystery as to just who one of the female characters is and what she represents to Jack.One part that I particularly enjoyed was Bruen's occasional references to the role Iain Glen plays in game of thrones. Glen, is, of course, the actor who plays Jack Taylor in some superbly made for television movies. There are other "inside jokes" for followers of the book series, which just adds to the fun, for this reader, at least.The question that has to be raised, at this point, is how long can Jack Taylor, drunkard, pill-popper, champion of justice in his own brutal way and master of kindness in his own way, continue to live the live he lives. For me, I don't care as long as Bruen keeps Taylor fans' appetites sated with his almost yearly entry to the series. I have no question that he is the master of the noir genre writing today. This book, like all the Taylor novels is a fast read and will make for great summer reading, if your soul has an attraction for some of the darkest places humans can go... HeadleyI read Ken Bruen's books the same way I read poetry: slowly, savoring every word. Indeed, I find in Bruen's fiction the sparse, precise language William Carlos William and e.e.cummings, as well as a gritty realism that evokes Charles Bukowski and the brash humor of Gerald Locklin. His anti-hero, Jack Taylor, is a non-conformist desperately seeking his niche, a non-believer in search of faith, a doomed soul inevitably drawn to the notion of redemption. Bruen's naysayers dismiss his references to contemporary events and various aspects of popular culture, a complaint frequently levelled at Stephen King; however, grounding the work in the workaday world is precisely what brings to his stories a sense of realism, a sense of familiarity, and precisely what makes his characters so knowable. After a professional life based on books, I find myself drawn to Bruen's fiction in a way I find quite surprising: I'm an absolute fan.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Oh and there's a very short but sweet mention of Iain GlenBy Mariane AgenaStill sharp and witty as ever, Ken Bruen never fails to shock (or is it surprise) his readers with shotgun storytelling.Old and new characters add color, or even more grayness, to Jack's life as he's back to his habits involving drugs and booze, as well as the occassional vigilante streaks.Filled with references to current and timeless books, films, tv shows and celebrities, (as is the usual) it could get a bit mindboggling going through the text without being aware of most of them, but they certainly do not diminish the mood but in fact enhances it if you happen to understand the reference used.Oh and there's a very short but sweet mention of Iain Glen, the actor portraying Jack Taylor in the tv movies, in this one. :)(Spoiler alert.
